Bring the frames back

A restoration of tall director-chair frames, with the customer handling the new canvas.

Documented July 2020From the workshop

Restore rather than replace

This commission focused on the existing chair frames. The photographs show the refreshed white frames before the canvas was supplied by the customer.

The detail work became the rewarding part

The original account is candid: I needed some help getting started, then found myself enjoying the detailed work. I was proud of the result while acknowledging the remaining flaws.

Restoring the frames

I restored the wooden frames and handled the paint and detail work. The customer was supplying the new canvas, so my part of the job stopped with the chair structure and finish. I needed some help getting started, which I said in the original account, but I got more comfortable as the detail work moved along. I was proud of the result while still seeing the flaws that come with learning a restoration job firsthand.
